Cheaper, more practical and now available to buy in Australia, this might be the Prado many buyers have been waiting for
Toyota Australia has confirmed a cheaper and arguably more practical version of its popular Prado large SUV with the arrival of a five-seat version of the best-selling GXL grade.
Priced at $78,990 before on-road costs, the five-seat GXL saves $1000 over the existing three-row version of that variant, though the NSW driveaway price of $85,386 reflects an even larger saving of $1365 once those on-road fees have been added.
The GXL is the only grade to be offered in both five- and seven-seat options, with the base GX and rugged Altitude restricted to a two-row configuration, while the remaining VX and Kakadu opt exclusively for the more generous seat layout.
Matching rivals such as the Ford Everest that offer a more affordable five-seat option on lower grades, the newest Prado option will also seek to lure back buyers who have been put off by the much-criticised, compromised boot layout of this latest generation.
As noted in our recent reviews, the poor packaging of the 48v mild-hybrid system has raised the height of the boot floor and the third row seating of the Prado in Australia significantly when compared to other markets, such as Japan, that forgo this system.
The seven-seat boot volume measures 182L with three rows in place, expanding to 906L in five-seat configuration.
Dedicated five-seat grades such as the GX and Altitude offer a capacity of 954L and side-steps other common complaints made of the seven-seat option, such as the compromises imposed by the additional storage box installed to give the Prado a flat floor.
The GXL is the most popular grade of Prado’s lineup, with the mid-spec option taking a big step up in specification over the base GX, offering the following features as standard.
